She'd been on the phone with her parents for about an hour when the question finally came up. "So, uh, when am I coming home...?" Catori asked her mom and dad eagerly, looking at her packed up dorm room. She was ready to see her family again; it had been a long time since they last time she had.
The silence stretched out for minutes. "Well, honey..." That was her mom, trailing off nervously. Catori could see, in her mind's eye, her mom turning to her dad and gesturing vaguely at the phone. She had a sneaking suspicion that that was what was going on in the seconds that followed until her dad spoke, voice sharp and abrupt. "You're not."
Shocked and upset, Catori had pretty much stayed silent in the moments that followed. "It's just that you're bad publicity, honey. You always end up wiping your makeup off, and then our customers start asking questions about your Mark. It's not anything bad, but we're just starting to get famous. I'm sorry honey, but we just can't risk it. You know how other people are about vampyres. Maybe next year, okay?" Her father had apologized too, they both had apologized. But Catori had just hung up the phone in the middle of the conversation and ignored it when it rang again and again.
That had been at the beginning of the summer. Some time had passed since then, of course, and Catori was over it. It wasn't a big deal. She figured she'd have more time at The House of Night than working all summer. Though having some fun with a cute human boy or two would've been nice. She and her parents were back on speaking terms, but Catori couldn't really call them whenever she got bored. And trust me, Catori was completely and utterly bored. She'd noticed within the first week that a large chunk of the school left for the summer (other than the weirdos, it seemed), leaving Catori flailing.
There was no one to talk to around here and Catori was starting to go a little bit crazy. Texting and calling all of her friends didn't quite make up for the complete and utter silence in the area, and it was really starting to bug her. So, on a whim, Catori left her dorm room (which always had music playing now) and headed for the Rec Hall. Hey, if there were still people around in the summer, they'd head for the Rec Hall, right?
It made sense to Catori. So she pulled on some jeans and a tank top and headed out into the night/day. The stars were dull and distant, almost completely overpowered by the city lights, but Catori spared them little thought. She wasn't one for stargazing. Instead, Catori made a beeline for the Rec Hall, tuning out the noises of the night. They were boring, unlike the vampyres that she would hopefully run into at the Rec Hall.
The thought had cheered Catori up significantly, and she was practically skipping when she wandered into the Rec Hall and headed over to the work out area. She examined the equipment absently, one hand on her hip as she looked over everything. Should she work out? Well, she was wearing jeans. And she'd just look dumb... But she was pretty bored.
